So I am going to get a new GFX card but it's been a long time since I've done this...

Thoughts or preferences between AMD or nVidia?

I have a AMD card which has been very solid and I am used to how to over clock it. I really don't have a preference as I've owned both... But it has been a long time (3 or 4 years) since I've even looked...

Crossfire isn't needed me thinks so go with one card, i think i've seen a mention of a sponsor called AMD if that is something to go by.
I was looking for the AMD card you mentioned as well for my future build if i can find the cash.

R9 270x here. It's not a beast. In Arma 3 i can't play Ultra if more than 3km view distance.

SC runs smooth max video settings. (i have a thermal issue but not with the game card).

My opinion the R9 is a very good option and cheaper than Nvidia. If you can afford a 280x don't think too much and buy it. I don't think my 270x can live more than 2 years. Superior cards than a 280x is money waste to me. Crossfire and SLI another money waste.

Don't miss understad me, if you want a 4k system or 3 monitors for a virtual cockpit, etc you will need evaluate all options.

Last years i have the philosophy never buy last/expensive version but renew faster. Nice results for me and my budget.

AMD if you want everything that can be offered even the kitchen sink (ports, features, etc.) and you will be able to squeeze get more for less, only cons I have normally ran into are normally the drivers are not as stable as NVidia, they run hotter and if the card is about to fail it fails quick and hard. NVidia drivers and hardware are normally more reliable, do not provide all the extras you normally get with an AMD card, software and drivers and the cost for a comparable AMD card is normally higher but you get stability and the cards normally run cooler and quieter.

So if you want a bang for your buck I would recommend AMD just keep a lookout on the temps and other metrics. NVidia is good too you pay a little more but the card probably won't pop on you while your in intense gameplay with everything cranked on high and your doing an all niter.
